What an MOT costs in Liverpool, and why it varies

The MOT is unusual among garage jobs: its price has a legal ceiling. The DVSA sets a maximum fee for a class 4 car — most cars with up to eight passenger seats — and no test centre may charge more than £54.85. There is no VAT on the test fee.

So the question is not what an MOT costs at most. It is why almost every garage charges less.

Why nearly everyone charges under the cap

Because the test is a way of getting your car onto a ramp.

A test takes under an hour and earns the garage a modest fee. The repairs that follow a failure do not. A garage discounting the test is buying a chance at the repair work, and that is a perfectly rational thing for them to do.

That is not a scam, and it is worth saying plainly, because the cheap-MOT-equals-dodgy-garage assumption is common and mostly wrong. But it does mean the advertised price is the least interesting number in the transaction.

What actually decides your bill

Whether it fails. The gap between a passing car and a failing one dwarfs any difference in test price. The cheapest test in the city is not a saving if that garage's repair prices are high.

Whether the retest is free. This is where the real money is. If you leave the car at the test centre and it is retested within 10 working days, the partial retest is free. Take it away and bring it back within 10 working days and you can be charged a partial retest fee. Leave it longer and you pay for a full test again. Ask about this before you book, not after you fail.

Whether it is bundled with a service. Booking a test alongside a service is usually the cheapest way to get one, and there is nothing underhand about it — you were going to need both.

What to ask before booking

1. Is a retest included if it fails, and within how many days?
2. If it fails, will you quote me for the repairs before doing any work?
3. Am I free to take the repair work elsewhere? (You are. The answer tells you about them.)

A garage that answers all three without hesitation is worth more than one that is a few pounds cheaper on the test.
