What an MOT actually checks — and what it doesn't

An MOT pass means one thing: on the day of the test, the car met the legal minimum for road safety and emissions. It is not a statement that the car is in good condition, and it is not a prediction that it will still be running next month.

That gap is where a lot of unexpected bills come from — "it only just passed its MOT" is one of the most common things people say when a car strands them.

What the tester inspects

The MOT inspection manual is organised into numbered sections, and they are the whole scope of the test:

0. Identification of the vehicle
1. Brakes
2. Steering
3. Visibility
4. Lamps, reflectors and electrical equipment
5. Axles, wheels, tyres and suspension
6. Body, structure and attachments
7. Other equipment
8. Nuisance

Read that list again and notice what is missing.

What it does not check

There is no section for the engine, the clutch, the gearbox or the transmission. Their internal condition is simply not part of the test. A car can pass its MOT with a slipping clutch, a failing gearbox, a rattling timing chain or an engine due a major service, because none of those are things the tester is asked to assess.

Nor does the test tell you anything about how long a passing component has left. Brake pads worn to just above the limit pass, and pass without comment unless the tester chooses to add an advisory.

Why this matters when you are budgeting

Two jobs get confused constantly, and they are not substitutes:

• The MOT is a legal test with a fee capped by law. It tells you whether the car is legal.
• A service is maintenance — oil, filters, fluids, checks against the manufacturer's schedule. It is what keeps the car working, and no part of it is legally required.

A car that has had ten MOTs and no services is legal and badly neglected. Garages often sell the two together at a discount, which is genuinely good value — just be clear you are buying two different things.

A useful habit

When you get your certificate, read the advisories even though the car passed. They are the tester telling you, for free, what is going to fail next. Acting on an advisory while the car is already in the workshop is nearly always cheaper than acting on it after it becomes a failure — and it avoids paying for a second retest.
